Nerd Alert: large data sets ahead!

Junk Chart donuts

After a two-year hiatus, I’m back to blogging. And what better to restart with than Junk Charts.

(If you’re wondering, the hiatus was involuntary. For all of 2011 and 2012 I worked at MoveOn, which asks employees not to blog publicly about politics, tech, progressive movement building, etc … in other words, everything I find blogworthy. But I’ve left MoveOn, so the blog is back!)

I came upon Kaiser Fung’s Junk Charts blog quite randomly, and the next time I looked at the clock, I’d wasted nearly two hours. That’s what happens when I stumble into Nerdville, I guess — I get addicted.

As the name implies, Junk Charts skewers all manner of crappy charts, infographics and other visual representations of data. Which makes me so happy. Bad infographics are a pet peeve of mine. It’s all too easy to take fairly understandable data and make them incomprehensible. I’m not a designer by any means, but I cringe when design impedes understanding.

My favorite post is English donuts rival Spanish donuts, which rips apart the twin charts above. Different sized donuts in different languages? No projection of current year data? Pshaw!

I’m not usually keen to ridicule other people’s work, but when someone smart does it for me, I’m happy to join in. :)
